It is a mistake that has sent multitudes to Hell because it is not taught in the Bible and is a false doctrine.It has many tentacles. Such as:1-Declaring a whole nation, a Christian under the ruler or state church being married to government.Tradition plays a big role in the fallacy, and the union of the state with the church makes it easy for someone to say I’m a Christian or Catholic or Protestant falsely equating this tag with salvation when it does nothing but identify them with that state religion.An example of this travesty has been Church History and the wars between Catholics and Protestants. When rulers or traditions governed a whole country, they forced the citizenry to that particular religion. Dissenters like Baptists who believed in biblical individual personal salvation required of everyone were on the outside looking and usually persecuted by that specific state-church arrangement.This arrangement played out in England, where Henry VIII was king, and his divorce from his wife and Catholicism resulted in him becoming the head of the new church of England. He persecuted Catholics, and his daughter, who was Catholic, persecuted Protestants and dissenters. This corruption has resulted in many thinking because they were born in England, they are “Christians” despite having no conversion experience. Churches are empty today in England for the most part, with this travesty playing a big role in their demise.2-Infant Baptism.Infant Baptism, which is never taught in the Bible, is closer related to state religion’s false assurance. Infant baptism disproval is understood by all Baptisms in the New Testament for believers and by immersion. No babies were baptized in the pure New Testament churches following Pentecost and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit in the church.I used to think infant baptism was harmless, and some say cute. But I have realized that it is a tremendous roadblock to true conversion. For instance, when asked if they are Christian, the typical Catholic will answer: “Yes,” I am Catholic. Although these two are not synonymous and usually opposite, they equate their membership as Catholic initiated by infant baptism with being Christian. It becomes a false assurance of salvation.Infant baptism is nowhere found in the New Testament. There is no record of babies being baptized, but only those who knew what was happening to them when they put their faith and trust in Christ for salvation. To tolerate this practice is to give a false illusion that whether you were baptized as a baby by a specific Catholic or Protestant priest, this makes you a Christian when you only get babies wet. Some traditions need to die, and this one has resulted in many missing heavens, thinking a false assurance offered by a certain ceremony as an unbiblical and false practice has made them Christian.3-Being in raised in a Christian Home and a Gospel Preaching Church.We give a false assurance by assuming that children are Christians in the environment in which they are raised. Thank God for a gospel-preaching church that calls people to repentance and faith in Christ. Granted, more people will be saved in a New Testament church that stands for the gospel rather than those who trust in a ceremony to declare them Christians.Sometimes, the best of intentions can get in our way. We cannot will children Christians and sign them up as believers when they have never come to a salvation experience. We individually and personally must trust in Christ as our Saviour and Lord to be saved. We will all individually give a personal account before the Lord as to our salvation or lack of it.Instances of children declared Christians in a gospel-preaching church have been seen in Church History. In New England during the early 1700s, a practice started by Jonathan Edwards’s Grandfather known as the Half-way Covenant featured signing children up as church members when they reached the age of 12. A majority in several churches did not understand the gospel and their personal accountability to it. It took Jonathan Edwards into a pocket of these young people signed up in the church this way and preaching one of the most famous sermons in history: Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. Those with this false assurance came under deep conviction of personal faith and trust in Christ’s atoning work to be saved. It became apparent you can only will someone to be a true Christian if they personally trust in Christ.Instead of Sponsorship Salvation, we need to trumpet Turnstile salvation. In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus said to enter the straight gate. This teaching is a call to enter into God’s kingdom individually. Again, in John 10:1-3, Jesus calls Himself the door of the sheepfold, meaning we go through the door to the kingdom of God individually. You go through a narrow door one person at a time. We may go to a sporting event with a group and go through the entrances together. Still, when you get to the turnstile at a stadium, you show your personal ticket, going into the actual sporting facility one person at a time. You cannot go through the turnstile for someone else, and you do not go through the turnstile because someone else has a ticket. You need your ticket as yours only\u2014so you may individually go through the turnstile.Baptists have stood for individual, personal salvation. God may use the nurture of a Christian home to help children trust in Christ as Saviour, but He does not save on the family plan. Personal salvation is an important belief that we must never waver on. It determines a person’s eternal destiny, and we must bring people to an understanding of their need for Christ so they can personally and individually trust in Christ as Saviour.
