Big Anniversary for First Baptist<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>BY EVE RICHARDS&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/saratogatodaynewspaper.com\/home\">NEWS<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>BALLSTON SPA \u2014 While the Village of Ballston Spa is known for its place in history as the original site of \u201chealing spring waters,\u201d the filming of \u201cThe Way We Were,\u201d and numerous antique shops, it is also known as home to several old and beautiful churches. One of them is The First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa, a handsome stone edifice located at 202 Milton Avenue. First Baptist has a long and rich history of ministry in the area, dating back to its origins in 1791. The congregation will gather to commemorate the Church\u2019s 225th anniversary on Saturday, October 15 at 6 p.m., with a celebratory event and catered reception. On Sunday morning, October 16, there will be a re-dedication service beginning at 10:30, which will include a presentation of proclamations from NYS Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner and NYS Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, as well as formal presentation of flags that have been flown over the Capitol in Albany in honor of the Church\u2019s milestone anniversary. The Saturday evening presentation will consist of a musical and historical narrative, which will include the Church choir, cherubs, and a performance on a specially designed bell array by the Church\u2019s Musical Director, Daryl Drew. The Church, as an organization, is older than the Village of Ballston Spa itself. When it began in 1791, it had only 24 members. Initially, there was no formal church building and the faithful would meet at each other\u2019s homes or in the village\u2019s schoolhouse to worship and work to fulfil the mission of their faith. As their membership grew, they welcomed their first Pastor, the Reverend Elias Lee, who was from nearby Saratoga Springs. According to Deacon Vallee Albert, one of eight deacons and the 225th Anniversary Committee Chairperson, Pastor Lee died in 1829 and is buried in the oldest portion of the Ballston Spa Cemetery. As the congregation grew, it was no longer possible to meet in one another\u2019s homes. While many of the early church records are missing or incomplete, available information indicates that the congregation gathered at a few different locations in the village, at one point convening in a building on the corner of Railroad and Science Street. By 1802, the size of the congregation had increased enough to warrant the construction of its own church, which was built on Front Street. They remained at that location for the next 80 years and, during that time, the congregation continued to grow and perform outreach both locally and around the world, under the auspices of the American Baptist Churches. In Spring of 1896, workers broke ground at the location where the church stands today. On December 20 of that same year, the imposing stone edifice that overlooks Milton Avenue opened its doors to its congregation, and to any others who wished to join. Now, 225 years later, First Baptist Church has more than 200 members and continues to welcome all who would like to join them in worship. First Baptist Church membership includes families who have been members of the Church for generations. As the size of its flock has increased, so too has the work and outreach they perform, both within the community and around the world. \u201cWe actively support missionary efforts across the world from Africa, Guatemala, Haiti and Europe,\u201d said Deacon Albert. On a more local level, First Baptist Church has active outreach missions across the region, with a summer-long ministry at the Backstretch Program for children of track workers, as well as a summer lunch program for school children throughout the area. \u201cWe began the summer lunch program four years ago and we served eight lunches a day. Today, we serve over 170 lunches a day at various locations within the Ballston Spa area. We have volunteers who drive as far as Galway to deliver lunches to children,\u201d said Albert. The Church also serves the community with Christ Cupboard, a food pantry serving over 100 families each month. The pantry was started with a small donation of less than $500 in 1990. Today, it has an operating budget of $4,000 per year. First Baptist performs monthly service ministries for residents of the Saratoga Center for Rehab (formerly Maplewood Manor), and they have adopted Army platoons for nine deployments, sending packages of love and care to American soldiers in Afghanistan, Iraq and Europe. The congregation also maintains a thriving connection with the Schenectady City Mission, where they serve dinners and spread their message of God\u2019s love to others. Deacon Albert estimated that there have been more than 1,000 baptisms since the mid-1800s and the pipes in the organ loft, while no longer in use, are the original ones from 1896. The First Baptist Church welcomes anyone who is interested in attending the events on October 15 and 16, and it anticipates a large turnout of congregation members and well-wishers from the surrounding community.Read&nbsp;<strong>3719<\/strong>&nbsp;times<\/li><li> <a href=\"https:\/\/bspabaptist.org\/\">First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa (bspabaptist.org)<\/a> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bspabaptist.org\/about-us\/beliefs\/\">Beliefs (bspabaptist.org)<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beliefs<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc-usa.org\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bspabaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/abclogo_edited.jpg?resize=193%2C180\" alt=\"abclogo_edited\" class=\"wp-image-2561\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Baptists have traditionally been people who do not enforce ecumenical creeds, but rather statements of faith. As a general principle, Baptists believe in in soul liberty. This means that in matters of faith, each person has the liberty to choose what his\/her conscience or soul dictates is right, and is responsible to no one but God for the decision that is made. This is not to say that Baptists have not had differences concerning beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, Baptists have affirmed these Christian distinctives<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Bible:<\/strong>&nbsp;The Bible is the final authority in all matters of belief and practice because the Bible is inspired by God and bears the absolute authority of God Himself. Whatever the Bible affirms, Baptists accept as true. No human opinion or decree of any church group can override the Bible. Even creeds and confessions of faith, which attempt to articulate the theology of Scripture, do not carry Scripture\u2019s inherent authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Freedom or autonomy of the local church:<\/strong>&nbsp;The local church is an independent body accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ, the head of the church. All human authority for governing the local church resides within the local church itself. Thus the church is autonomous, or self-governing. No religious hierarchy outside the local church may dictate a church\u2019s beliefs or practices. Autonomy does not mean isolation. A Baptist church may fellowship with other churches around mutual interests and in an associational tie, but a Baptist church cannot be a \u201cmember\u201d of any other body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Priesthood of all believers:<\/strong>&nbsp;Every believer has direct access to the throne of God.&nbsp; Therefore, since every child of God shares in the priesthood of the believers, all have the same right as ordained ministers to communicate with God, interpret Scripture, and minister in Christ\u2019s name.&nbsp; This is first and foremost a matter of responsibility and servanthood, not privilege and license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two ordinances:<\/strong>&nbsp;(sometimes called sacraments in some protestant churches)&nbsp; We practice baptism by immersion because it alone preserves the picture of saving truth. It proclaims the imagery of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ (Romans 6:1-5). We believe that the Lord\u2019s Supper is a symbolic Christ\u2019s body broken for our sins and His blood shed for our redemption. It does serve as a spiritual connection and helps us remember Jesus\u2019 death, and inspires us while looking forward to Christ\u2019s coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Individual Soul Liberty:<\/strong>&nbsp;Every individual Christian has the liberty to believe, right or wrong, as his\/her own conscience dictates. While we seek to persuade people to choose the right, a person must not be forced to into compliance, realizing that it is not always the larger group who holds the truth when, in fact, our heritage as Baptists has demonstrated the worth of every individual believer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Separation of Church and State:<\/strong>&nbsp;Historically, Baptist have fought for religious freedom. In a famous letter to Thomas Jefferson, the Danbury Baptists affirmed that \u201cOur Sentiments are uniformly on the side of Religious Liberty \u2014 That Religion is at all times and places a matter between God and individuals \u2014 That no man ought to suffer in name, person, or effects on account of his religious Opinions \u2014 That the legitimate Power of civil government extends no further than to punish the man who works&nbsp;<em>ill to his neighbor\u2026<\/em>\u201d Our Baptist forerunners such as Roger Williams, Isaac Backus, and John Leland believed that the state cannot enforce religious law upon its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two offices:<\/strong>&nbsp;There are two spiritual roles that Baptists have upheld, pastor and deacon. The pastor serves as the spiritual shepherd, teacher, and church leader. Deacons serve as the spiritual hands and feet of the church. Deacons assist in worship, give assistance, and aid in spiritual nurturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to those Baptist beliefs, we also hold to basic Christian beliefs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Holy Scripture:<br><\/strong>We believe that the Scriptures were given by the&nbsp;inspiration of the Holy Spirit on the hearts and minds of the writers. The&nbsp;Bible&nbsp;consists of the Old and&nbsp;the New Testament, which&nbsp;are&nbsp;the Word of God, inerrant in the original language.&nbsp; The&nbsp;scriptures are the final authority for our lives, faith and belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Godhead:<\/strong><br>We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Lord Jesus Christ:<\/strong><br>We believe the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal son of God, became human, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by God the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, and lived a sinless life. He came that He might reveal God and redeem humanity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Salvation<\/strong><br>We believe the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins for all people, and all who trust\/believe in Him are saved by grace through faith, and are kept secure unto salvation in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resurrection and Ascension<\/strong><br>We believe in the physical resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord Jesus Christ; and in the ascension of Christ to heaven where He is exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Second Advent of Christ<\/strong><br>We believe in the personal return of our Lord Jesus Christ for His redeemed ones, and that our Lord Jesus Christ will establish His Kingdom and rule and reign in righteousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Eternal State<\/strong><br>We believe in the bodily resurrection of all humankind, the saved to eternal life in heaven and saved from judgment and punishment in hell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Church<br><\/strong>We believe the local church is the spiritual representation of the body of Christ.
