Emails show that Gregory Folkers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/R_H_Ebright\/status\/1795454118594568312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intentionally misspelled the name<\/a>&nbsp;of Kristian Andersen, a tactic Morens suggested to avoid FOIA, after Andersen received an $8.9 million NIAID grant, which came two months after he authored a paper arguing that it was \u201cimprobable\u201d that COVID-19 had a lab origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawmakers brought this to Fauci\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have any role,\u201d he said, \u201cin FOIA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that Fauci was&nbsp;<em>running the department<\/em>&nbsp;didn\u2019t seem to bother him. Indeed, Fauci\u2019s deflection of responsibility for anything was the primary theme of the hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. David Joyce (R-OH) pointed out that Fauci had pushed the destructive 6-feet social distancing policy, which he later admitted was \u201cnot based on science\u201d and \u201cjust appeared.\u201d Fauci was unfazed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a CDC decision,\u201d said the man who led the White House COVID-19 Response Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) read emails between the Biden administration and Facebook related to the government\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/the-government-s-sprawling-effort-to-censor-true-information-during-the-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sprawling COVID censorship effort<\/a>, which included a pressure campaign on social media companies to remove lab leak-related content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAm I on those emails?\u201d Fauci asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Jordan asked about the effort to downplay the lab leak theory, Fauci denied any part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve kept an open mind throughout the entire process,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This last line was too much for some viewers. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1797673984089362781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cited the exchange<\/a>&nbsp;as proof that Fauci is \u201ca pathological liar,\u201d while Rutgers University professor Richard Ebright used the word&nbsp;<em>perjury<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a reason this claim riled up so many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/06\/03\/opinion\/covid-lab-leak.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ran an article<\/a>&nbsp;pointing out that the COVID-19 pandemic likely started in a lab, a view also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/607699\/christopher-wray-says-fbi-believes-covid-19-most-likely-originated-from-lab-leak-in-wuhan-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">held<\/a>&nbsp;by the FBI. Such an article would have been verboten in 2020 or 2021, and a big reason why was that a high-profile study published in&nbsp;<em>Nature<\/em>&nbsp;in March 2020 concluded: \u201cSARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though he did not disclose it at the time, a trove of FOIA emails reveals that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aier.org\/article\/caught-red-handed-scientists-call-for-full-retraction-of-natures-proximal-origin-paper-as-fraud-accusations-mount\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fauci\u2019s fingerprints are all over that study<\/a>. The emails also show the authors privately believed that a lab leak was&nbsp;<em>likely<\/em>. Meanwhile, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/fauci-throws-cold-water-conspiracy-theory-coronavirus-escaped-chinese-lab-2020-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">perusing<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/anthony-fauci-wuhan-lab-coronavirus-source-dismissal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">articles<\/a>&nbsp;from 2020 and 2021 and comical&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/miltimore79\/status\/1797756737321349382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video evidence<\/a>&nbsp;make it clear that Fauci\u2019s claim that he was not \u201cleaning totally strongly one way or another\u201d in the origin debate is false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fauci has a history of these memory problems. When confronted in TV interviews in 2022 about the harms of school closures, a policy he supported numerous times, Fauci said&nbsp;<em>don\u2019t blame me<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had nothing to do [with it],\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/fauci-claims-innocence-on-school-shutdowns-i-had-nothing-to-do-with-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he told<\/a>&nbsp;ABC\u2019s Jonathan Karl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did the same thing with lockdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t recommend locking anything down,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RisingTheHill\/status\/1551641236225785862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fauci told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Newsweek<\/em>&nbsp;editor Batya Ungar-Sargon in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fauci apparently forgot that there was video evidence of him&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mazemoore\/status\/1797688866004246946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying in October 2020<\/a>, \u201cI recommended to the president that we shut the country down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s quite amazing. Fauci\u2019s testimony was like the hit 2000 song by Shaggy, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T_x6QmuJdms\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It Was<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T_x6QmuJdms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T_x6QmuJdms\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2019t Me<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Democrats gushed over Fauci\u2019s pandemic response \u2014 \u201cThank you for your science,\u201d fawned Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-HI) \u2014 the only thing we really learned at the hearing was that Fauci wasn\u2019t responsible for&nbsp;<em>anything<\/em>. Not the corruption at NIAID, the agency he led. Not the unscientific policies he may or may not have supported, depending on who\u2019s asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hearing was a four-hour reminder of the problem with putting politicians and bureaucrats in charge of people\u2019s personal lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions,\u201d the economist Thomas Sowell said, \u201cthan by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand that unaccountability is a feature of bureaucracy, not a bug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it\u2019s an institution that inherently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/feeonline\/status\/1720108762944372919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rules by violence<\/a>, a bureaucracy is rarely held accountable for its mistakes \u2014 even catastrophic ones. This is in stark contrast to private companies, which face consequences if they make a mess of things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his testimony, Fauci said that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2959870\/fifteen-agencies-aware-of-controversial-ecohealth-coronavirus-research-paul-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grant to EcoHealth Alliance<\/a>, which funded research at the Chinese lab linked to COVID\u2019s origin, wasn\u2019t his fault because he couldn\u2019t possibly review them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour name is on every single grant,\u201d Rep. Michael Cloud (R-TX)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/COVIDSelect\/status\/1797668651304182089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cYet you absolve yourself of any sort of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a Kafkaesque cost of such governance, and few have described it better than David Mamet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen the experts blow it,\u201d the Oscar-nominated playwright&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/when-the-experts-fail-everyone-else-pays-the-price-11606519279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;in 2020, \u201ceveryone else pays.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"\"
