{"id":19583,"date":"2024-07-13T18:53:46","date_gmt":"2024-07-13T22:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/awarningministry.com\/?p=19583"},"modified":"2024-07-13T18:55:35","modified_gmt":"2024-07-13T22:55:35","slug":"hath-made-or-made","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/awarningministry.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/13\/hath-made-or-made\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8230;hath made or made&#8230;?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purecambridgetext.com\/post\/hath-made-or-made\">hath made or made (purecambridgetext.com)<\/a><a class=\"\"> <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a class=\"\">Paul Scott<\/a> &#8211; 2 min read &#8211; 7\/11\/24<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">&#8230;hath made or made&#8230;?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the midst of extremely stormy seas, the prophet Jonah awakens and declares:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonah 1:9 (King James) \u2013 \u201c\u2026I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, <strong>which hath made<\/strong>&nbsp;the sea and the dry <em>land.\u201d<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonah 1:9 (NIV) \u2013 \u201c\u2026I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, <strong>who made<\/strong>&nbsp;the sea and the land.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a student of the word (not an expert), I noticed a huge difference in this testimony:&nbsp; the KJV uses the present perfect tense (<em>hath made<\/em>); the NIV uses a simple past tense (<em>made)<\/em>.&nbsp; &nbsp; If I were a lawyer and trying to prove a case before a jury, I\u2019d use this point of grammar to win big-time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>_____________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Past Perfect Tense (used in KJV) \u2013 An action started in the past and continues in the present:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The auxiliary verb<em>&nbsp;hath, <\/em>coupled with the past participle <em>made,<\/em>&nbsp;reveals the depth of Jonah\u2019s testimony in the midst of this storm.&nbsp; In other words, \u2018Hey, God made the seas and he continues to be active he also made these stormy seas!\u2019&nbsp; This storm is happening because he wills it so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>_____________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Past Tense (used in NIV) \u2013 A past only action, a fact:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only the past participle <em>made<\/em>&nbsp;is used.&nbsp; God made the seas in the past, over and done &#8211; a simple fact. Therefore, this present storm happened by\u2026luck, or global warming, or whatever; no assignment is given.&nbsp; The source of the storm is ambiguous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>______________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jonah of the KJV knew exactly who initiated this storm; it\u2019s not the \u2018other gods\u2019 of the sailors (Jonah 1:5), it is the LORD \u2013 he alone is the reason.&nbsp; (Jonah correctly uses <em>which<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 distinguishing him from the other gods.)&nbsp; The grammar confirms this testimony.
