” … Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach
her not: And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for
her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her
not.”<\/em><\/strong> Ruth 2:15b & 16<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth was a young widow who moved with her mother-in-
law, out of worldly Moab, back to Israel, because of the love
for Naomi and her God. When they arrived, they were very
poor. In order to take care of their needs, Ruth went to work in
the harvest fields, gathering that which the harvesters had
missed.
The Law provided this way for poor people to exist.
When Boaz, the owner of the field, saw Ruth working, he was
impressed and told his harvesters to let some grain fall on
purpose so Ruth could gather it. Our text above describes
what a blessing it was to them.
Several lessons can be drawn from this bit of Bible history.
First, as Jesus said in John 12:8, “the poor always ye have with
you; ” Poverty would be a problem in every generation, so it is
not surprising that there are poor people today. Second, some
poor people are willing to work when they are given the
opportunity. Ruth was working rather than begging! Third,
we should watch for opportunities to help. God may be giving
us opportunities to be a blessing to discouraged men and
women. Fourth, we should help, however we can, on purpose.
It might be with money, it might with food, it might be with a
job, or it might just be with a kind word of encouragement.
