You shouldn\u2019t doubt your salvation if you\u2019re saved through\nbelief in Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God,\nbelieve also in me. 27<\/sup>Peace I leave with you, my peace I give\nunto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled,\nneither let it be afraid.  John 14:1, 27<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your heart feels doubt, well-meaning people will ask if\nyou ever prayed the \u201csinner\u2019s prayer.\u201d \nIf you asked Jesus to save you, they\u2019ll say, you\u2019re saved and on your\nway to Heaven.  They\u2019ll quote this verse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall\nbe saved.  Romans 10:13<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

John 3:16, the best-known verse in the Bible, shows that\nbelief is also needed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only\nbegotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but\nhave everlasting life.  John 3:16<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:\nand he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God\nabideth on him.  John 3:36<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prayer isn\u2019t enough. \nGod wants to take everyone to Heaven, but He has conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have\nno pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from\nhis way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye\ndie, O house of Israel?  Ezekiel 33:11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I [Jesus] tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye\nshall all likewise perish. 5<\/sup>I tell you, Nay: but, except ye\nrepent, ye shall all likewise perish.  Luke 13:3, 5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salvation requires that you choose to call on the name of\nthe Lord as described in Ro. 10:13, but the very next verse tells us that\ncalling on the name of the Lord to save you without belief in Him<\/em> is worthless:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not\nbelieved? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and\nhow shall they hear without a preacher?  Romans\n10:14<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just praying the sinner\u2019s prayer leaves out belief<\/em> and repentance <\/em>which are essential for salvation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,\nand shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,\nthou shalt be saved. 10<\/sup>For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;\nand with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.  Romans 10:9-10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your prayer has value only when you have belief in your heart<\/em>.  John wrote \u201cunto you that believe.\u201d Those who\nbelieve<\/em> on the name of the Son of God\nknow<\/em> they have eternal life, the rest\nhave doubt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These things have I written unto you that believe on the\nname of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and\nthat ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.  I John 5:13<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering\ninto his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2<\/sup>For\nunto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached\ndid not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. \nHebrews 4:1-2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t rest in Jesus, you can\u2019t have the belief God\nrequires for salvation without understanding the saving knowledge of Jesus\u2019\ndeath, burial, and resurrection.  You\nmust believe that His death paid the price for your sins, my sins, and for all\nsins ever committed and that His resurrection proves His power over death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You must agree with God about the utter evil of your sins, believe\nthat you deserve the punishments of Hell because of your sins, believe<\/em> that you must repent and turn\naway from your sins, ask Jesus to wash your sins away with blood He shed on the\ncross, and believe that He will<\/em> clean\naway all your guilt and shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God gave you a conscience to show you what is right and what\nis wrong:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts,\ntheir conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while\naccusing or else excusing one another;) \nRomans 2:15<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWork of the law\u201d means that everyone has enough of Moses\u2019\nlaw \u201cwritten in their hearts\u201d by God to know right from wrong.  Your conscience shows you that you have\nsinned against the law of God.  Instead\nof letting others excuse you from having to repent because you said a prayer,\nyou must admit your sins, turn away from your sins, and call on the name of the\nLord in the same way as the thief on the cross:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him,\nsaying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40<\/sup>But the other answering\nrebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?\n41<\/sup>And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds:\nbut this man hath done nothing amiss. 42<\/sup>And he said unto Jesus, Lord,\nremember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43<\/sup>And Jesus said\nunto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.  Luke 23:39-43<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thief met the conditions of Ro. 10:9-10.  He believed in his heart<\/em> in the evil of his sins.  Saying that he was receiving the proper\npunishment for his sins was his \u201cconfession unto salvation\u201d of Ro. 10:10.  He then<\/em>\ncalled on the name of the Lord.  In\nasking Jesus to remember him \u201cwhen thou comest into thy kingdom,\u201d the thief\nshowed that he believed that Jesus would rise from the dead.  Jesus accepted him into Heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asking God to clean your heart after recognizing the\nseriousness of your sins is also in the Old Testament:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine\niniquities. 10<\/sup>Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a\nright spirit within me.  Psalm 51:9-10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God wants you to believe, \u201cBut without faith it is\nimpossible to please him (Heb. 11:6).\u201d  A\nfather prayed, \u201cLord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief (Mk. 9:24).\u201d  Ask God to help you believe and to help you\nrepent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why You Might Doubt<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Doubt will be rare if you\u2019re truly saved:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the\neffect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.  Isaiah 32:17<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that\nwe are the children of God:  Romans\n8:16<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are Biblical reasons for doubt, however, and you need\nto know how to deal with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. You may hear a false gospel.  Paul\u2019s letter to the Galatians reminded them\nthat they did not have to be circumcised or keep Moses\u2019 law in order to be\nsaved.  If someone tries to add a\nsalvation requirement beyond repentance and belief, be sure to check the\nScriptures!<\/li>
  2. Satan may remind you of your sins to cause you\nfear or doubt.  In such times, remind God\nof His promise, \u201cIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us\nour sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (I John 1:9)\u201d and ask Him\nto help you conquer your unbelief.<\/li>
  3. You may forget your need to lean on the Lord\nduring the storms of life.  Peter became\nso afraid of the authorities that he forgot that Jesus had warned him that he\nwould deny Jesus.  When the cock crowing\nreminded him, \u201che went out, and wept bitterly (Mt. 26:75).\u201d  Nourish your mind and soul daily by reading\nHis Word, think about what you read, and \u201cPray without ceasing (1 Thes. 5:17).\u201d<\/li>
  4. You might be on your way to Hell.  Jesus promised that the Spirit of God would\nreprove the world \u201cOf sin, because they believe not on me (Jn. 16:9).\u201d  If the Holy Spirit tugs at your heart no\nmatter how often you repeat the sinner\u2019s prayer, rejoice!  God is drawing you to saving faith through\nrepentance!  The thief on the cross\nhumbled himself, admitted<\/em> his guilt\nand the justice of his punishment before<\/em>\ncalling on the Lord.  Being too proud to\nadmit you aren\u2019t saved has sent many to Hell. \nDon\u2019t join them!<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
