We Need More Charlie Kirks<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination is a chilling attack on free speech, but his legacy will inspire new generations to defend faith, freedom, and America First values. By Fred Fleitz<\/a> September 12, 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t realize how good I had it when I was a conservative undergraduate student in the 1980s. Although liberals dominated my campus, the professors generally tolerated the free exchange of ideas. I helped co-found a College Republican club at my undergraduate school, Saint Joseph\u2019s University in Philadelphia, without worrying that this would harm my academic standing. I also learned to avoid the few far-left professors who abused their classes to indoctrinate students in socialist and anti-American ideologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was a political science major at St. Joe\u2019s. Fortunately, most of the political science professors were either conservatives or classic liberals who admired U.S. politicians like John F. Kennedy, Scoop Jackson, and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. They loved their country and encouraged open debate in their classes. I was gratified in the early 1980s when the St. Joe\u2019s Political Science Department fired a new professor who was using his international relations classes to teach Marxism and penalize conservative students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, things changed for the worse in the decades following my graduation. Conservative and classic liberal political science professors retired and were replaced by far-left radicals who implemented classes in globalization, anti-capitalism, \u201canti-fascism,\u201d anti-Israel and antisemitic ideologies, radical societal change, DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), gender politics, and intersectionality. This far-left ideology spread across every college discipline, even the sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colleges and universities became radical left and extremely hostile to conservatives. Conservative students could not risk revealing their political views on campus because they feared this would hurt their grades and lead to harassment from fellow students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charlie Kirk believed this was unacceptable. This is why, in 2012, at the age of 18, he co-founded Turning Point USA to counter liberal politics and intolerance in U.S. high schools and colleges. Turning Point became a powerful national grassroots movement dedicated to identifying, organizing, and empowering young people to promote the principles of America First, free markets, and limited government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man of deep Christian faith, Kirk also used his movement to promote traditional Judeo-Christian values and empower Christians to put their faith into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glen Beck has called Turning Point USA \u201cthe largest, most impressive, and fastest youth movement in the country.\u201d In 2024, it had a presence on 3,500 high school and college campuses with more than 250,000 student members. The organization received over $84 million in contributions for the fiscal year ending June 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirk promoted conservative values and free speech on college campuses through nationwide college tours and his \u201cprove me wrong\u201d engagements, where he invited students to debate him on any topic. Kirk often moved dissenting progressive and left-leaning students to the front rows of his speeches so he could engage them directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using his massive grassroots movement and mastery of social media and podcasts, Kirk became an influential conservative political leader and kingmaker. His movement helped recruit and organize young conservative voters and activists who supported America First policies, limited government, and traditional values. He became a prominent leader of the MAGA movement and struck close friendships with Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr., JD Vance, and many other MAGA leaders. Kirk spoke at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Republican conventions and helped develop the America First philosophy that guided Trump\u2019s domestic and foreign policies. In 2020, Kirk authored the best-selling book, \u201cThe MAGA Doctrine: The Only Ideas That Will Win the Future<\/a>,\u201d which outlined the principles of Trump\u2019s \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump gave Kirk credit for an influx of young voters who helped him win the 2024 presidential election. Kirk\u2019s $100 million \u201cChase the Vote\u201d campaign and \u201cYou\u2019re Being Brainwashed\u201d tour across 25 college campuses significantly increased Trump\u2019s support from younger voters, narrowing his deficit with 18-29-year-olds to 11 points in 2024 compared to 24 points in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assassination of Charlie Kirk was a gross assault on the American tradition of tolerance and free speech. This horrific act of violence is a result of years of escalating rhetoric by the Left against those who champion conservative values. Violence has now replaced debate, and those who dare to stand up for their beliefs are under direct attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also reflects the dangerous effort on college campuses and in our society at large by the Left and the mainstream media to undermine our democracy by imposing far-left policies on our country that most Americans do not support, while censoring and demonizing conservatives who oppose this effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The constant talk by Democratic members of Congress and CNN and MSNBC talking heads demonizing President Trump, such as their constant smearing of him as a dictator and a fascist, is fueling divisions and violence in our country. This has been made much worse by the toleration and tepid responses by Democrat politicians and the liberal media to the violence this hateful rhetoric has spawned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have already seen more of this in the aftermath of the Kirk assassination as the liberal media and the Left engaged in vicious vitriol and \u201cwhataboutism\u201d and made sickening claims that blamed Kirk\u2019s conservative views and President Trump for his assassination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The battle to promote peaceful debate and the free exchange of ideas on college campuses and throughout our country has a long way to go. Although there have been some wins to depoliticize college campuses this year in response to the Trump administration\u2019s policies, these reforms are mostly minor and fragile. Much more needs to be done to implement permanent change that brings true diversity of thought and tolerance to American colleges and universities, and results in the firing of vast numbers of radical, anti-American professors who are trying to wait out this administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of an evil assassin who took his life, Charlie Kirk left us far too soon. He was the future of conservative activism and would have been a leading candidate for president. However, I sincerely believe that his martyrdom while doing what he believed in\u2014debating ideas with people who disagreed with him\u2014will inspire many young Americans to follow in his footsteps as new Charlie Kirks to restore American freedom and traditional values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk, a man of deep faith and a great father, husband, and patriot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classical ed is the answer to left-wing protest culture.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The shocking murder of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University puts an exclamation point on the degraded state of reasoned debate in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many in the last month, I\u2019ve found myself doing a deep dive into Kirk\u2019s YouTube channel, watching debate after debate. You learn something from watching them in full: Kirk was willing to talk to anybody, and he always brought liberals to the front of the line. He was pugnacious at times, but always civil. It was his interlocutors who would sometimes resort to ad hominem attacks, and their arguments often collapsed as they met a steady stream of his questions and retorts. Time after time, these students lost the debate with Kirk because they simply didn\u2019t know enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What causes a person to stake out a position with such confidence before mastering the evidence to support it? For many of the students who challenged Kirk, the answer is action civics. This is a pedagogical theory that teaches that the highest form of civic participation is protest rather than discussion. Its result is thoughtless grandstanding or worse. The antidote to this state of affairs is classical education rightly understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to civics, knowledge is necessary but not sufficient. Civic life requires more than a grasp of American history and government, as important as those things are. It requires us to be people formed by practice in the habit of reasoned deliberation\u2014people who know how to disagree and be disagreed with, and who are willing to change their opinions when they learn something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political speech\u2014reasoned discussion about the good within a regime\u2014allows us to improve our opinions by sharing them with others and refining them through conversation and disagreement. Civic education divorced from these practical virtues produces either performative activism or feckless intellectualizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These virtues can be cultivated within the classroom through classical education. Reading and discussing works from Aristotle to The Federalist <\/em>allows students to wrestle with enduring questions about justice, rights, and the good life. They learn not only to discern what is right, but also to pursue it amid the complexities of a changing world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the real formation comes in seminars and Socratic discussions, which are laboratories of civic practice. After years outside of the classroom, this semester I began teaching a course on moral and political philosophy to 11th graders. These students are young, but after years in a classical school, they have some real learning under their belts. The task this year is to develop within them the habits necessary for a real seminar conversation, with Socratic discussion three days a week and a full-blown seminar on the other two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a well-run seminar, teachers merely provide a question about a great work of literature, history, or philosophy, intervening to guide the discussion only rarely. As in life, no authority swoops in to give the right answer and make decisions for everyone else. It\u2019s the students who lead and who learn to find their way together. A properly run seminar allows students to disagree and be disagreed with. They are forced to humble themselves before an author and a text, to scrutinize their own opinions, and to discard error in favor of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it isn\u2019t a lawless environment. Students in a well-run seminar know that they are to speak about the text, and only the text. Every comment must be in response to the previous speaker. Non-sequiturs are not allowed, and the students don\u2019t interrupt each other (we are still working on that last one). When they do speak, they have to ground their statements in an argument drawn from the text. If they don\u2019t have an interpretation of the text to offer, they can ask a thoughtful question, which is often just as beneficial to the conversation as a well-reasoned argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disagreement in the seminar room is an opportunity to learn that disputing someone\u2019s argument doesn\u2019t mean impugning their character. Most teenagers are terrified to disagree with someone their own age, and even more terrified to be disagreed with. But after experiencing it for a few weeks, they develop thicker skin. They learn to think more about the substance of their argument and less about their social standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the arbiter of the debate is the text itself, everyone knows that success means advancing the clearest and most correct reading. And when the text is rich and deep, it takes time, conversation, and disagreement to interpret it well. Disagreement is an opportunity for clarification. In a well-developed seminar, it\u2019s welcomed. What matters is not superficial civility, but the willingness to examine and revise our opinions in light of reason and fact, to argue from truth rather than feeling, and to labor toward a common understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a way, these classroom discussions on Plato and Virgil, Swift and Shakespeare, are a crash course in practical civics. Not protest, not theory, but character formation through dialogue, study, and experience\u2014all preparing students not only to understand their country but to participate in it responsibly. In a way, classical education creates more people like Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we want a citizenry capable of sustaining liberty, we cannot settle for activist training without understanding, nor abstract lectures without practice. We must teach our students to be virtuous, both individually and politically. Only then will they be capable of self-government\u2014not as activists or spectators, but as citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
