Parents should consistently express visible and verbal declarations of their love for their children. Child discipline is an indispensable part of this. Children should be raised to understand parental discipline as something that is not only equitable<\/em>, but something that they can expect<\/em> as a result of wrongdoing as surely as they can expect night to follow day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Newton (1775-1807) was a great British preacher, and author of the hymn \u201cAmazing Grace.\u201d Reflecting on his childhood, he wrote: \u201cI know that my father loved me, but he never seemed to want me to know it.\u201d Parental love, consistently expressed in ways both tender and tough, will prevent children from ever having such a thought as this. Such love gets a powerful and permanent grip on the hearts of children that will be felt by them as long as they live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
