Hunting history- starting in Virginia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hunting history- starting in Virginia. People approach Baptist history in different ways- Some prefer to read and absorb that, others are storytellers taking in what we have learned and condensing into a story. There is a third and often neglected element- that of place. For me I read and absorb, I make illustrations and tell the story but in turn I like to absorb in a place as well. I take pictures (that must be genetic- my father was an avid photographer taking a little under 30,000 pictures in his life and that was way before digital) and in turn these help me with the story. There may be little remnant of what was once there- the church building may be gone, the cemetery overgrown and headstones missing but still you are there where it happened. I like the idea of Baptist history tours but how many places haven’t been found? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am in the process of going through Robert Semple’s “History of the Baptists in Virginia” This book gives a snapshot of the churches 1810- 210 years ago. The revision was done by G.W Beale in 1897 (my copy is a 1970’s reprint) and makes footnotes about the churches there. Semple tries very hard and did a tremendous job of pulling in information of most of the churches of that time. It is a fascinating book- Semple is blunt honest in looking at issues in churches and it is amazing how many went through problems similar to today. There were problems with sin and false doctrine then and now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My intent is to start to compile the locations of these churches and try to eventually visit many of them. This will be simple in some cases more difficult in others. Unfortunately for a book of this era locations are marked by bodies of water and even the notes from the 1896 revision detail railroad lines rather than roads. Many of these churches have passed out of existence (and indeed many had by the time of the revision) My intent is to start in Pittsylvania County (I live in Danville VA) as well as the neighboring counties of Halifax and Henry and kind of work outward from there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I find this kind of detective work interesting and there are tools today that earlier generations can only imagine. There is Google Earth- Find a Grave as well as many county histories online. Find a Grave and a little obscure reference in a county history once helped me to find the location of Wabash- the second oldest Baptist Church in Indiana. I would like to encourage everyone go out and visit your local history. I will be charting some of this on our church’s website- (There are lots of other sites on here but not off this list yet) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the years God has given me the opportunity to visit many Baptist history sites and research many others. I firmly believe the thing that has caused so many Baptist churches to go astray is the fact that they have forgotten their heritage, Biblical and Historic. Sadly even some of these historic churches have forgotten where they once stood. Pastor Jim<\/p>\n\n\n\n
