2:11 <\/strong>As a matter of principle in the church, God has ordained that women are not to be outspoken. Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection<\/strong>. The word translated as silence<\/strong> (\u2018\u03b7\u03c3\u03c5\u03c7\u03b9\u03b1 hesuchia<\/em>) has the more basic sense of \u2018quietness.\u2019 The Apostle Peter touched upon the same in 1Pe<\/strong> 3:4<\/a> in his comment regarding \u201ca meek and quiet spirit.\u201d The same basic word appears there for quiet<\/em>. The greater principle derives from the more basic concept that the woman is to be subordinate to the man. (This does not in any way imply an inferiority of the woman. Rather, it is the delegation of authority through the male gender. The idea is very similar to the leadership of the husband in the home.) Though this certainly cuts across the grain of modern feminist philosophy, it nevertheless is a biblical principle. Godly women, particularly in the church, ought to so deport themselves with a quiet spirit. It is not their place to be outspoken, loud, or seeking authority. The idea is not of passive silence like a mouse. Rather, Paul\u2019s instruction is for a submissive spirit which is obvious in its few words. 2:12 Therefore, women ought to be in a position of sub<\/strong>mission, not in authority over or as teachers of men in the church. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence<\/strong>. The thought is not that a Christian woman ought never teach. Rather, it is that they ought not usurp authority over men. The word translated as usurp authority<\/strong> (\u03b1\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9 authenteo<\/em>) has the sense of \u2018domineering\u2019 or of \u2018asserting oneself.\u2019 Again, the word translated as silence<\/strong> (\u2018\u03b7\u03c3\u03c5\u03c7\u03b9\u03b1 hesuchia<\/em>) has more of the thought of \u2018a quiet spirit.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, Paul\u2019s greater teaching at this point is that a godly Christian woman ought to have a meek and quiet spirit. This is particularly so in the context of the church. God has delegated authority in the church through the pastor and deacons. They are men. The principle is not of inferiority or oppression. It simply is maintaining the order God has ordained. When a church so operates, there is a sweet spirit. When women seek to usurp that relationship, everyone is troubled, including them. The modern feminist philosophy is in direct contradiction to God\u2019s ordained social order. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
