\n<\/strong> The Biblical Husband<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not have only women \u201ccome a long way,\nbaby\u201d, as an old ad boasted, but men also have come a long way. Unfortunately,\nthe \u201clong way\u201d is downward, away from God and the way He wants them to live. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For millennia men knew their purpose and\nroles.  Now media, society, and social\nengineering have altered how husbands \u201cshould\u201d function in a marriage.  Husbands are often confused as to how they\nshould behave in relationships and often do not function the way God intended\nthem to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, as far away as man has drifted,\nHis Creator has still preserved the way he should live.  Without God\u2019s way man will not be what He\nwants him to be.  Families and marriages\nwill suffer, and the world will not function properly when the man is not\nliving up to the way God desires of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is some of what the Bible teaches\nabout the responsibilities, needs, and purposes of a husband:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most\nmen need a wife.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd\nthe LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him\nan help meet for him.\u201d Gen. 2:18<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhoso\nfindeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.\u201d Pro.\n18:22<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNevertheless,\nto avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have\nher own husband.\u201d I Cor. 7:  <\/em>This\nverse does not say they should have a \u201dtrial\u201d marriage, or \u201cshack up\u201d\ntogether.  They should marry to avoid\nsin!  Also: Pro. 19:14 and I Cor. 11:9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\na man marries, he is of one flesh with his wife.<\/strong>  When one demeans or does not respect his\nwife, he is only hurting  himself;\nbecause the two are one in God\u2019s eyes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd\nAdam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be\ncalled Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave\nhis father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be\none flesh.\u201d Gen. 2:23-24<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor\nthis cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto\nhis wife, and they two shall be one flesh.\u201d Eph. 5:31<\/em>  Also: Mat. 19:4-5, Mark 10:7. Eph. 5:28-30, I\nCor. 7:4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite\nwhat the women \u201clibbers\u201d are forcing others to believe, man is supposed to be\nthe head of the household.<\/strong> \nEach sex is created differently, and each has their own strengths and\nabilities.  One sex is not better than\nanother.  They are only different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man is physically stronger and is\ndesigned to protect his family and make decisions, although he is not to be a\ndomineering bully to his other half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A woman is certainly more compassionate,\noften more level-headed and is usually a sensible, loving part of a family,\nthat the man cannot naturally provide. (Her strengths can be found in Pro.\n31:13-28.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good marriage is not usually two of\nthe same kind and strengths, but is often the merging of two different \u201chalves\u201d\nthat make a stronger, more balanced whole. \nOne of the halves has strengths the other half does not have, and the\nother side has qualities that the other is weak in.  That is why, in a God-joined marriage, they\nare one flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut\nI would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of\nthe woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.\u201d I Cor. 11:3<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWives,\nsubmit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband\nis the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is\nthe saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so\nlet the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.\u201d Eph 5:22-24  <\/em>Also: Col. 3:18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man\nis to love, respect, and treat his wife well! <\/strong>  She is his other half, and he should take\ngood care of that part of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\nthe husband render unto the wife due benevolence <\/em>[showing\nkindness and good will]: and likewise\nalso the wife unto the husband.\u201d I Cor. 7:3<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHusbands,\nlove your wives, and be not bitter against them.\u201d Col. 3: 19  <\/em>Also: Pro. 5:18,\nEcc. 9:9, Mark 10:7, I Peter 3:7, Eph. 5:25<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nhusband has the responsibility of providing for his family.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut\nif any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he\nhath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.\u201d I Tim. 5:8<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nmarried to an unsaved spouse, one should stay with them, if possible.<\/strong>  A godly spouse\u2019s testimony and godly living\nmay point the mate to salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor\nwhat knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest\nthou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?\u201d I Cor. 7:16<\/em>  Also: I Cor. 7:14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of what the Bible tells a husband\nto do is either unknown or ignored today. \nMan\u2019s way in marriage relationships seldom work; that is most likely why\n40-50% of marriages end in divorce (according to the American Psychological\nAssociation). <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marriage is often difficult, but it is\nan institution created by God.  He\ncertainly knows what works and what does not. \nHe is not trying to deny any of having a good marriage, just the\nopposite.  A marriage will work if the\nhusband and wife work together and follow God\u2019s plan for them in their\nrelationship.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/em><\/strong>If more men\nwould step up and be the husbands and family leaders God expects  them to be, many women would not have to step\nin and do their \u201cjob\u201d for them!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ephesian 5 Husband\nand Wife<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSubmitting\nyourselves one to another in the fear of God. 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto\nyour own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the\nwife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the\nbody. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to\ntheir own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ\nalso loved the church, and gave himself for it \u2026 28 So ought men to love their\nwives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no\nman ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the\nLord the church: \u2026 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother,\nand shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. \u2026 33\nNevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as\nhimself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.\u201d Eph. 5:21-33<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ephesian\n5 discusses a subject which bristles the hair on the back of many\nnecks. It takes a position that has been hated and rebelled against for\ngenerations. Unfortunately, the refusal to follow God\u2019s commandments in this\narea has resulted in a current divorce rate near 50%. Paul discusses, in Ephesian\n5:21-33, submissiveness between a married man and woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submitting,\naccording to Noah Webster, is the yielding or surrendering to an authority. The\nfirst surrendering to an authority discussed here is for both husband and wife\nto surrender to each other (vs. 21), because they have respect for God\u2019s\ncommandments! They are to submit to each other because God tells them to,\nand they should know God\u2019s way is always best. God ordained the union\nbetween man and woman; so He certainly knows how it will work. No other way\nwill be successful!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wife is\nalso to submit to her husband (vs. 22). When she is humbling herself to do so,\nshe is doing it \u201cunto the Lord\u201d. What a step of faith it takes for a wife\nto trust the Lord in this way. I am sure most women shudder at this point,\nthinking all kinds of situations: \u201cWhat happens if I submit to him, and my\nhusband treats me badly?\u201d; \u201cWhat happens if I let him be the authority and\ndecision-maker, and he makes wrong decisions?\u201d; \u201cWhat happens if I don\u2019t get my\nsay?\u201d, and countless other senarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those\nsituations could come to pass, if the husband does not hold up his commitments.\nThat is why it is so important that a marriage be between believers (II Cor.\n6:14). However, there are no retractions for bad decisions in marriage partners\nin God\u2019s Word. No matter the spiritual status, one is still committed to hold\nup his part of the marriage, as the Lord commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are\nmany marriage failures, because couples did not adhere to God\u2019s way; but rather\ntry to cohabit the way \u201ceveryone else is doing it\u201d. When failures in a\nmarriage do occur, it is usually because someone is not holding up his end of\nGod\u2019s commandments for that person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submission\nin a marriage is not just the wife\u2019s responsibility. The husband also has\na part to make a marriage work. His part is not just surrendering to his\nwife, but he is to love his wife as Christ loves His church (vs.25); as much as\nhe loves his own body (vs. 28, 33). One should not want to do wrong to his own\nbody; so also he must only want to do what is right and best for his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marriage is a picture of Christ\u2019s (vss. 23,\n25, 27, 32) submitting His body to die for the sins of man. Jesus\nsubmitted to His Father and allowed Himself to be payment for our sins. As we\nsubmit ourselves to Christ, we should also submit ourselves to each\nother. God\u2019s way works!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe husband should be the houseband,\nbinding all together like a cornerstone, but not crushing everything like a\nmillstone.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>\u2014 Spurgeon<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
