Where is he mentioned in the New Testament?\n\nJude was the brother of James the pastor of the Jerusalem\nchurch and of Jesus the Messiah.\n\n<br>\n\nHe is mentioned in Matthew 13:55-56 Is not this the\ncarpenter&#8217;s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and\nJoses, and Simon, and Judas? &nbsp;And his sisters, are they not all with us?\nWhence then hath this man all these things? \n\nand Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the\nbrother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters\nhere with us? And they were offended at him.\n\n<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\nDate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nThe book was written about 67-68 AD before the fall of\nJerusalem under Titus in 70 AD.\n\n<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\nPurpose <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nAt first Jude wanted to write about the doctrine of\nsalvation but the spirit and his heart led him to write a warning against evil\nand deceitful men.\n\n<br>\n\nThe Epistle of Jude warns against the incipient heresy of\nGnosticism, a philosophy that distinguished sharply between matter, as being\ninherently evil, and spirit, as being good. Such a system of thought had\nserious implications for Christian life and doctrine. It challenged the\nBiblical doctrine of creation. And it gave rise to the idea that Christ&#8217;s body\nwas only apparent, not real, for if Christ had had a real body, it would have\nbeen evil. In its effect on Christian ethics, Gnosticism prompted two quite\ndifferent results: on the one hand antinomianism, the belief that one is not\nunder obligation to obey the moral law, and on the other a form of abuse of the\nbody to promote spirituality. Both are opposed by Scripture. It may be inferred\nfrom the epistle that the readers were guilty, in varying degrees, of rebellion\nagainst authority, irreverence, presumptuous speech, and a libertine spirit.\nJude&#8217;s tone is polemic, for he rebukes false teachers who deceive unstable believers\nand corrupt the Lord&#8217;s table. &#8211; (from The Wycliffe Bible Commentary, Electronic\nDatabase. Jude 1-4.\n\nAdmonitions against false teachers. Jude 5-16.\n\nExhortations to Christians. Jude 17-23.\n\nBenediction. Jude 1-4.\n\n&nbsp;How does Jude\u2019s\nsalutation compare with Paul\u2019s or John\u2019s?\n\nVery similar to Paul\u2019s grace, hope and love but John\u2019s is\nmuch more directly plunging into his subject with few words of salutation.\n\n<br>\n\nHow does vs. 3 show Jude\u2019s original purpose and how it\nchanged?\n\nHe says he first wanted to write of the \u201ccommon salvation\u201d\nbut due to a great need had to warn against ungodly men crept in unawares.\n\n<br>\n\nWhat were these ungodly men teaching?\n\nThey were turning the grace of God into lasciviousness (worldliness),\nand denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ, (the deity of Christ)\n\n<br>\n\nAdmonitions against false teachers. Jude 5-16\n\nWhat is Jude\u2019s plain warning in vss. 5-7?\n\nThat God judges ungodliness harshly and a past relationship\nwith God is not a shield from punishment.\n\n<br>\n\nIn vs. 8 these evil men are accused of rebellion against\nauthority. What does the apocryphal story of Michael and Satan have to do with\nthis accusation?\n\nJude is using the story as an example of Michael the\narchangel appealing to the authority of God whereas these false teachers refuse\nall authority.\n\n<br>\n\nWhy is the Apocrypha not a part of the NT since Jude quotes\nit here?\n\nJude uses it as an example which fits his argument, he does\nnot equate the entire book to scripture. \n\n<br>\n\nWhat is Jude\u2019s accusation in vs. 10-11?\n\nThey condemn the spiritual which they cannot know and the\nphysical which they do know, they corrupt. They are more interested in power\nand money than in truth. (Some things really haven\u2019t changed at all.)\n\n<br>\n\nIn vs. 12, list and explain the 5 labels Jude used for these\nearly Gnostic teachers.\n\nSpots in your feasts of charity: hidden rocks upon which the\nChristians could become shipwrecked, fellowshipping with them in the love (agape)\nmeals.\n\nclouds they are without water: disappointed hope like rain\nclouds that don\u2019t rain in the midst of a drought.\n\nTrees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead:\ntrees without leaves or fruit which are destroyed after not producing.&nbsp; \n\nRaging waves of the sea: aimless wasted energy littering the\nbeach with their refuse.\n\nWandering stars: shooting stars, meteorites which brightly\nburn but burn out and are destroyed.\n\n<br>\n\nVs. 16 shows how these men operate. How did they raise\nthemselves up in the church?\n\nThey murmured (talked against others). They complained\n(spoke against the church and its leadership) They spoke great swelling words\n(swayed people with fancy word and style).\n\nWhat was their real motivation?\n\nTheir own lusts and seeking out important people to sway to\ntheir own advantage.\n\n<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\nExhortations to\nChristians. Jude 17-23.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nJude gives a contrast between the Gnostics and the true\nChristians in vss. 18 -21. What are the differences they should see and strive\nfor?\n\nGnostics are prophesied mockers who walk after their own\nungodly lusts. They separate themselves from Christians because they only have\nphysical senses not the Spirit of God\n\nChristians, on the other hand, build up their holy faith, they\npray in the Spirit\u2019s power and keep themselves in the love of God, while also trust\nin the mercy of Jesus Christ for eternal life.\n\n<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\nBenediction. Jude 24,25.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nHow does Jude\u2019s benediction also contradict the Gnostics?\n\nIt states that only Jesus is able to keep us and that He is\nour Savior and God.\n\nAccording to vs. 24, can a true child of God ever fall\naway?&nbsp; Can they ever be lost again?\n\nNo the passage clearly states that Jesus keeps us not we ourselves.\n\n<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\nConclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> What a turn of a life for Jude, the little brother of Jesus. Once he and his other brothers had told people that Jesus was \u201cbeside himself\u201d in the Greek, the literal meaning was \u201cmoonstruck\u201d meaning they thought he was crazy. Now that same brother is no longer filled with doubt but is filled with faith and indignation against any who would dishonor Jesus, his Lord and Savior. <br> The change in Jude, from a doubter of Jesus\u2019 sanity to a believer in His being the Savior, is one of the strongest proofs of Jesus bodily resurrection, for what else could change the hearts and minds of the family that had grown up with Jesus? It is also proof of what Jesus can do with our own doubts, fears and disbelief. If we will but look and listen.
