While Isaac Backus charted a history of the Baptists in New England very close to the time of events, the same could be said for how Semple shows the history of the Baptists of Virginia. Semple lived from 1769-1831 and wrote this in 1810- a revised version was done in 1895 by GW Beale. This is the more common version and the reprint that I have. Although I have not done a side by side comparison of the two- from what I see Beale updates more the current (1895) status of the churches and associations rather than make changes to Semple&#8217;s history. Writing so close to the time Semple gives so much information about early Baptists of Virginia (and a little of North Carolina) both the preachers and the churches. There is much here about the persecutions that those early preachers experienced in Virginia as well. They were beaten, stuffed in jail and faced many other trials for the cause of Christ. The pioneer churches are also covered in this work. (Their locations are a little fuzzy though as sites are near this creek or that railroad- little harder to research.) The Baptists of Virginia make a good study as well for other states and they fanned out in the first wave of westward expansion. Originals and even reprints are a little hard to come by of this work. There are some that are done by modern reprinters off the electronic versions but has been noted before- these often have major problems. My edition is a reprint done in 1972 by Polyanthos. This seems to be a company that published old books rather than just Baptist or Christian titles. It is an accurate copy unlike modern ones. It was one I got off Ebay.
