Does that make the gathered assembly “the fake church?” Many say would say if we have a Bible Study in your home it is “the church,” claiming that where two or three are gathered in my name there I am in the midst of them. ” That though is basically Jesus saying he would be with a group gathered in his name by His presence but he did not say that it was the church. One such person made this claim in a community where I served as pastor. He said that “They were the church and when someone accepted Christ, they just took them out to the swimming pool and there baptized them.” The New Testament knows no distinction between the big church and the little church. 110 out of the 114 times the word ecclesia is mentioned it only refers to a called-out assembly and not an invisible group of people who never assemble but still claim to be the church over the other one. Today it seems with our giving into consumerism that people are looking for a church that will do the most for them and require the least amount of commitment. We have false definitions of the church which basically stem from the Catholic idea of the church which at least they are honest about when they call their meetings parishes instead of churches. Face it: Catholicism’s idea of the church has infiltrated evangelicalism and resulted in New Testament churches hurting when people ought to be involved in their congregations the most. We hear people say things like: “I don’t join a church because I don’t believe in formal religion,” as if that gives them a pass from any involvement that they don’t want to be in. Yet, the New Testament church will not conform to people’s definition of what they want the church to be. It is not invisible, it is not all believers, it is not the denomination, it is not those who never assemble, it is not those who do not immerse believers on their true profession of faith. It is not Christian T.V., it is not other groups who have sprung up from man-made organizations founded by men. The New Testament church was founded by Jesus in His ministry, called out by His disciples, commissioned after His redemptive work with authority. The New Testament Church was in existence at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit empowered them, and they baptized converts who it says were added to “them Acts 2:42.” From that first church grew others all over the world through Paul and his influence and the disciples. They baptized believers, they practiced evangelism, they discipled new believers, they observed the Lord’s Supper in the place God recognized its legitimacy there in that local congregation. These churches have continued to the present day in spite of a false religious system that has substituted false doctrine and, in some cases, pagan rituals for the truth. The greatest mistake of this system was to trick people into thinking they were the “True Church” and going through all of its sacraments made them Christians when it was for the most part a sham. Despite men and their followers establishing congregations around them, true New Testament churches have rolled on. Just as you can’t make a cow into a horse or dog into a cat, so you can’t make what people want the church to be to become the church of the living God. For this definition of the church and their practice, our Baptist forefathers were roundly persecuted and suffered even martyrdom at times during the Reformation times. William Estep says, “A most important fact often overlooked is that the very concept of the gathered church, the heart of Separatism, was evidently Anabaptist in origin and not a conscious product of the Magisterial Reform. None of the Reformers developed an ecclesiology of churches composed of committed disciples only.2William Estep, Anabaptist Beginnings (1523-1533): A Sourcebook: Bibliotheca Humanistica & Reformatorica (Book 16). They knew the only church was a believer’s church, the only true baptism was a believer’s baptism and the only true church was one that assembles together as baptized believers who carry out Christ work under the leadership of spiritual leaders till He comes again.
