Travels in Baptist History 2- Silver Creek Baptist Church The Silver Creek Baptist Church, the first Baptist church started in Indiana. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Began as the Owen’s Creek Baptist Church in 1798 By Isaac Edwards. William McCoy, father of Isaac McCoy missionary to the Indians would pastor this church. He is buried in the cemetery along with his wife Elizabeth. In 1829, the majority of the church went over to Campbellism and voted to remove articles of faith and the Baptist name. A little group of 10-12 people led by Deacon John McCoy took a stand and left while holding fast to Biblical Baptist doctrine. For a while they met in a sink hole that made a natural amphitheater. The Campbelite faction derogatorily referred to them as the sink hole elect and for a while they actually took the name of Sink Hole Elect Baptist Church. When the Campbellites built a new frame building they “generously” allowed the Baptists to have the building that they originally had provided they move it brick by brick- which they did. The building still stands although unused. (The church would later merge with another) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
