The Monument at ChanforanThe next stop on the Trail of faith is a ragged looking natural stone monument called the “Monument at Chanforan” which marked a turning point in Waldensian history in 1532. It was at the original in a grassy field that about 150 Barbas made several decisions that would prove fateful and we will look at each of these. Some in retrospect would be harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. For 15 years the Waldesians had been watching the reformation. The Barbas had also conferred with several in the reformation. Some of this may have been due to relation as some of Calvin’s cousins were Waldensian. At the counsel they decided to join with the reformation. Looking in retrospect that was a grave mistake- they lost much of their distinctiveness as time would go on. Compromises would happen. An even greater compromise happened after a plague in 1630 when many of the Barbas died. They sent unto Geneva for help and they sent Protestant pastors. Immediately thereafter there was a change in their doctrine. They were also sending their Barbas for training in places like Geneva. (I do think that it is important to note even though they joined with the Protestants they predated them and thus were not Protestant in origin)<\/li>
  2. They decided to move from their local dialect of Patois to French and Italian for services and intercommunication.<\/li>
  3. They decided to move to more open services and church buildings. This would be a mixed blessing as we shall see. Even though they would grow by doing this they also left themselves more open to attack.<\/li>
  4. They would help to finance the translation of the Bible into French from the original languages. Pierre Robert Olivetan who was a Waldesnsian cousin of Calvin translated the Scripture from the Greek and Hebrew. (It is apparent that he was already at work on it because of the time frame) Calvin later revised this. This was completed in 1535<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Hindsight is always 20\/20 and in retrospect as the Waldenses threw their hand in with the reformation they lost some of their distinctiveness as well as would eventually compromise. The Protestants would provide them help and some measure of assistance however. For a desperate people in constant fear of persecution such a thing was a prime consideration.I will make a couple of notes here too as well in regards to Baptist History. We do trace some of our history through the Waldenses- (For more information on the links I highly suggest Martyr’s Mirror- it shows very well the links between the Waldenses and the Anabaptists as well as details the different groups of Waldenses- not all agreed) however there were several similar movements at the same time as the Waldenses that we also trace through including the Welsh Baptists and the Anabaptists (among others but that is beyond the scope of this article and covered in other places in the Baptist Church History group) It is not just one stream but many. The fact that the Waldesians compromised greatly at this point does not effect their earlier history. They gradually moved towards a more Protestant position. (It is however to be noted that not all agreed to this counsel and there is variation among the Waldensian people to this day) I think it is also interesting that Waldensian history after this point started to be rewritten as well. Early sources (even the tour video notes this) among them indicated that the movement predated Peter Waldo. Today the “historians” claim Peter Waldo was the founder much the same as the Whitsitt movement tried to rewrite Baptist history to start with Smyth when there were obviously churches that predated him.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
