\u00a0Travels in Baptist History 17- The Waldensian Trail of Faith Part 7<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail to exile did not think that a little path up a hill and a handrail would be quite so poignant ……..In the period of 1487 through 1689, the Waldensians fought 33 wars. Their villages were burned and their people slaughtered. Yet through all of this, they still stood their ground. The period from 1655 through 1686 was the most devastating however in their history. Their suffering would go to unimaginable levels and the atrocities committed to them are some of the worst in the history of men. In 1650 a decree was made by the Duke of Savoy that the Waldensians demolish their churches, dismiss their pastors, close their schools, and attend mass. This decree went unenforced until 1655 which would mark the 100th anniversary of public services. What should have been a joyous time became one of immense suffering. In early April delegates from the valleys met the Dukes Emissary the Marquis de Pianezza. The night before the meeting he marched in 15,000 troops into the valleys. On April 17th he ordered the Waldenses of Torre Pellice to provide quarters for his men. They refused and he attacked. the Waldenses were able to repulse the attack with few men. That had shown that he was unable to take the area even with vastly superior numbers- he resorted to trickery. On April 21st he met with the Waldenses and assured them that he was only there to punish those that would resist the orders of the Duke and no one else should fear if they only quartered some troops. Three villages agreed to house troops. THAT WAS A LIE. The next morning on Easter at 4 AM a signal sounded and savage brutality that has little parallels in human history unfolded in those formerly peaceful valleys. Women were ripped open with sickles, old and young were showed no mercy. Elderly ladies were burned alive, old men were cut apart. The savage brutality extended to children dashed upon the rocks and even roasted alive. These armies of hell even ate the brains of some of the Barbas and the flesh of children. (Many of the martyrs are documented in part three along with a link to a book that documents many more cases) These scenes of horror outraged Europe. Cromwell proclaimed a fast and sent John Milton as an emissary to the King of France in protest (France had supplied troops and encouraged the war.) He also threatened the pope that he would send English guns against the pope’s fortress in Rome (would to God that he did.) The situation would calm down until 1685 when Louis XIV repealed the Edict of Nantes which made all non-Catholics noncitizens. The Paper clergy had convinced him that the best way to atone for his sins and assure his salvation was to wipe out the Protestants (the Waldenses named as such) Louis’ Cousin was the Duke of Savoy. He demanded that the Duke go after the Waldensians who he claimed were harboring the Huguenots. In 1686 the Duke of Savoy ordered the total abolition of the Waldensian religion. All religious meetings carried the death penalty. The pastors and teachers were ordered to become Catholic along with all children. On Monday, April 22nd the day after Easter another bloodbath swept through the Waldensian valleys. All Waldensians dead or alive were declared traitors and their goods and land confiscated. The survivors were committed to dank prisons where many died. Some Waldensians had hidden and carried out a guerilla warfare campaign capturing garrisons and raiding convoys. This attracted the Duke’s attention and he agreed to release the prisoners and gave them a choice- renounce your religion and be permitted to stay in your valleys or march in exile to Switzerland. Only 4000 were left alive to be released from their chains and 3\/4 of them chose exile and a march over the alps through two feet of snow. This brings us to the handrail and the difficult path up the hill strewn with rocks. It gives but just a little taste of what they went through. The narration is told from the point of a soldier here. When we went it was a warm spring day and the path was hard to even with a handrail. I imagined what it would be like with no handrail and two feet of snow then multiplied many hundreds of times over. 200 perished through the mountains and only 2656 limped into Geneva. What about those that were so generously allowed to stay in their valleys if they renounced? Well, that too was a lie. They were banished to a swamp where most died of typhus or were sent to the galleys as slaves for ten years. Satan lies and is a murderer.
