Travels in Baptist History 18- The Waldensian Trail of Faith 8<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sibaud and the Glorious Return.Psalms 20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.8 They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.As you look through history there is the providence of God throughout it all. There have been battles fought and won where there is simply no explanation for how it could have happened. What can you say about a victory that even Napoleon wondered at? Such was the victory wrought at Sibaud by Henri Arnaud, Waldensian pastor and leader of the Glorious Return and probably one of the greatest military strategists of all time. On August 16th 1689 900 courageous men embarked on one of the most amazing military campaigns in history. Outnumbered immensely by the combined armies of France and Savoy they faced from a human standpoint one of the most impossible tasks possible- the return to their alpine valleys. They faced not only the armies arrayed before them but also the spine of the continent, the Alps. They would cover 128 miles of some of the most treacherous terrain on earth in only eight days. The early skirmishes seemed not promising, they fought their way village by village and the battles claimed a third of their number either killed or captured. When they arrived at Salbertrand the found 2500 well rested French Troops camped beyond the bridge to face their little band of 600 hungry men. Arnaud stopped only to pray that God would deliver them from their “inevitable destruction” and spare them He did. They not only took the bridge but they routed the enemy killing 600 French soldiers with the loss of only 15 of their comrades. The wounded French commander fled. This opened the door of the march to their beloved homeland. On the 27th they reached the first of the Waldensian Villages Balziglia. On the 28th day they reached Prali to find one of their temples still standing. There Arnaud would lead them in worship and preached from Psalm 129:2 “Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.”On September 1st 1689 The entire company would make an covenant at Sibaud bear Bobbio that they pledged to defend each other and their cause to death. It was at that site 200 years later in Italy that a monument was ererected. Near the top is a stone for each Waldensian church with the name chiseled there. The reproduction at Valdese replicates this.Their oath was carried out in a guerrilla type warefare throughout the valleys to repulse the invaders. As winter approached the valiant little army was hemmed in on all sides and needed to find a place of defense for the winter. The returned to the Massello Valley and entrenched themselves in a natural fortress above Balziglia. The French and Savoy forces had a simple plan- wait and starve them out over the winter. As the Waldensian forces began to dig foxholes they found themselves right in the middle of a potato patch. God had provided. The stalwart group held out until May 13th 1690. As a dense fog fell over the valley the remaining 300 men slipped stealthily out of their besieged fortress down into the valley. They passed within feet of the French enemies campfire yet were protected from detection. Their long fight was rewarded when the Duke of Savoy severed alligences to france and welcomed the Waldensians back into the valleys and granted them religious liberty on May 23, 1694. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
