The Trail concentrates on telling the rest of the story of their culture into the present time. We will look at some coming to America in our final installment and a glimpse of today. (As well as an assessment of issues among them) The next stop on the trail is the Beckwith School. Education was always vastly important to the Waldensians- The Bible was cornerstone and they believed that everyone should be able to read and interpret the Scriptures. Even the little children were taught to read and memorize scripture. In times of persecution not only were the churches shut down and destroyed but also the schools. To read the Bible was considered a very dangerous thing by their Catholic enemies. In those times too their enemies dictated that the children should either not be educated but (Perhaps we could learn a lesson for today- the world is out to get our children and educate and indoctrinate them as they see fit- don&#8217;t let them.)General George Beckwith was a Canadian officer in the British Army and an aid to Wellington in the Battle of Waterloo. He would visit the Waldensians and settle among them for nearly 30 years. He would help finance and build 165 school buildings among the Waldenses. This is a replica of one of these little one room schoolhouses named Beckwith Schools in honor of their benefactor. Unfortunately I missed getting a photo of the bookcase in the back. The little children would take their naps in the shelves of the bookcase- feel sorry for the ones on top.The next stop on the trail is a reproduction of a monument\/ fountain presented to the Waldenses by King Charles Albert I. Now considering the Waldensians who had such a horrible history with governments of the past get such a monument? In 1844 the King took a journey through the valleys. At that time the Waldensians were still being oppressed and there were concerns for his safety. Instead of a tumult though he was welcomed with hospitality. This so impressed the King that he presented this fountain to them. Four years later an even more momentous occasion occurred on February 7th 1848 as the king signed the Edict of Emancipation. The Waldensians were granted the same political and legal rights as other citizens. It did allow the Waldensians to conduct evangelization and education freely outside their valleys.
