A young man was callously hanged without benefit of trial, James Few. According to one of the Regulators, McPherson said he was &#8220;a young man, a carpenter by trade, and owned the small spot of ground just outside of Hillsborough. He was engaged to be married to a young lady whom Fanning seduced. He was a member of the Regulators; was taken on the field of battle; and, at the instigation of Fanning, was executed on the spot.&#8221; (Foote, Swain, and Caruthers.) (Some accounts say that he was driven to madness by what fanning did to his fiancee.) On May 17th after he was unable to join the Battle of Alamance and upon hearing of the defeat Benjamin Merrill would disband his forces and have them return home. Clearly he wanted to avoid further problems with his men. This would be little consolation for them in the days ahead however. Merrill would face a worse fate in the time to come.At Alamance the focus shifted to the burial of the dead and the care of the wounded \u201cGovernor Tryon, after the Battle of Alamance, ordered a court of oyer and terminer to meet at Hillsborough and adjourn from day to day until his arrival with the prisoners. His next order was that &#8220;the dead should be buried on May 17, at five o&#8217;clock in the evening, in front of the park of artillery,&#8221; &#8220;funeral services to be performed with military honors to the deceased.&#8221; &#8220;After the ceremony, prayers and thanksgiving for the signal victory it has pleased Divine Providence yesterday to grant to the King&#8217;s army over the insurgents.&#8221; (Col. Rec., Vol. 8, P. 584.) For the accommodation of the wounded who were too badly injured to march with the army, Tryon appropriated the residence of Captain Michael Holt, on whose plantation the battle was fought, and fitted it up for a temporary hospital. A man from each detachment, with one sergeant, was ordered to report to the hospital for guard duty. John Walker was appointed hospital steward, reporting to Dr. Richards, surgeon in charge.\u201d (Neglected History of North Carolina by W.E. Fitch) As a note in my research and visits to the site I had not heard that those killed in the battle were buried here. One note indicates that they were buried near the positions of the cannon which were roughly in a line on either side of the present highway according to the battlefield map. I believe that the likely candidate would be some woods on the far side- no marker is there.  Yet another mystery.
