The War of the Regulation Part ten- the occupation of Sandy Creek Baptist Church May 18th \u2013 25th<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the Battle of Alamance and the skirmish before were the only times that Tryon\u2019s forces were challenged with force of arms this was just the beginning of the war for Tryon. Sandy Creek lies about 18 miles south of Alamance. The grounds of Sandy Creek Baptist Church had seen many a revival and camp meeting. So many came with curiosity and left with faith in the Savior. The creek behind her had seen many a man baptized that would go on to be a preacher. God had blessed in great ways in this corner of the North Carolina back country. From this church preachers fanned out into Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina as well as westward. Soon they would spread further many times not by choice. But now it was a very different scene, an armed camp. Tryon\u2019s armies had the audacity to park themselves for a week upon this ground that was dedicated to the Savior. These armies that supported the state Anglican church and the corrupt officials now had the boldness to take over Sandy Creek. It is a little unclear exactly when the armies marched toward Sandy Creek but likely it was about the 18th. When Tryon\u2019s forces ranged on the surrounding countryside they were perhaps a little less destructive here that later because Sandy Creek had urged more pacifism. They would burn little but the invading army foraged throughout the area appropriating food and supplies and giving generally worthless tickets in return. Yet this was not enough for Tryon who would occupy her grounds as a hostile forces. Herman Husband\u2019s home (a Quaker leader of the Regulation) had been located about a mile or so north of Sandy Creek. It had been burned once before by Fanning but would be targeted again. All the the neighborhoods around Sandy Creek were forced to provide for this army although Tryon seems to have compensated more people in this area. He would issue at least two proclamations here. Anyone that had been outlawed by decree was not permitted pardon.This occupation was devastating to Sandy Creek. The members would scatter away from the area and the church was reduced from 606 members to just 14 souls. Thousand would flee from Baptist settlements in the short time ahead crossing into South Carolina, Georgia, and further west into what is now Tennessee and Kentucky. To even further devastate the church in months ahead, her preacher Shubal Sternes that great herald of revival would go on to his great reward on November 20th of the same year. The scattered remnants of these Baptist Churches forced onward by war in North Carolina and persecution in Virginia would plant seed all across the western frontier. It was not only Sandy Creek that would suffer. Dr Huffman in North Carolina Baptist Historical Papers notes that heavy requisitions were made for flour and beef were made at Haw River, Deep, River, Rocky River, Grassy Creek, Abbots Creek and Forks of the Yadkin. All of these were Baptist Settlements and meeting houses. It is not entirely clear when during the campaign this was done as several were closer to a couple of other places the army camped. Regardless it seems that Baptist settlements were singled out. What a travesty. How many times through history has government though that they had authority over the church of the living God? In the past year we have seen petty little dictators arise that think that they have authority over the church. Nothing has changed in 250 years. We must always guard our freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
