Acceptance to the officer program requires successful completion of interviews at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Naval_Reactors\">Naval Reactors<\/a>&nbsp;in Washington, D.C., and a final approval via a direct interview with the Director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion, a uniquely eight-year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Admiral\">four-star admiral<\/a>&nbsp;position which was originally held by the program&#8217;s founder, Admiral&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Hyman_G._Rickover\">Hyman G. Rickover<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women were allowed into the Naval Nuclear Field from 1978 until 1980, when the Navy began only allowing men again.<sup>[<em><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Military_Wiki:Citation_needed\">citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup>&nbsp;With the repeal of the Combat Exclusion Law in the 1994 Defense Authorization Act, and the decision to open combatant ships to women, the Navy once again began accepting women into NNPS for duty aboard nuclear-powered surface combatant ships.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Female graduates of NNPS may serve at shore commands and on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nimitz_Class\">Nimitz Class<\/a>&nbsp;aircraft carriers. Female officers may also serve aboard SSBN and SSGN submarines. The first female officers bound for submarines began training at NNPTC in late August 2010.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enlisted personnel graduate from Nuclear Field &#8220;A&#8221; School for rating as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Machinist%27s_Mate\">Machinist&#8217;s Mate<\/a>&nbsp;(MM),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Electrician%27s_Mate\">Electrician&#8217;s Mate<\/a>&nbsp;(EM), or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Electronics_Technician\">Electronics Technician<\/a>&nbsp;(ET) and are advanced to the rank of a Third Class Petty Officer. They then commence to Nuclear Power School. Graduates of the Nuclear Power School continue training with twenty four weeks of instruction at a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Naval_Nuclear_Power_School#Nuclear_Prototype_Training_Unit\">Nuclear Prototype Training Unit<\/a>. This training involves the operation and maintenance of nuclear reactors. Graduates of NPTU are qualified nuclear operators and continue on to serve in the fleet. The enlisted school has a very high academic attrition rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sailors in the nuclear ratings account for 3% of the enlisted Navy.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of locations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally, the school was located at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Naval_Submarine_Base_New_London\">Naval Submarine Base New London<\/a>&nbsp;in Groton, Connecticut.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It was moved in 1962 to (the now former) Naval Training Center&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Naval_Training_Center,_Bainbridge\">Bainbridge, Maryland<\/a>&nbsp;and later to (the now former)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Orlando_Air_Force_Base\">Naval Training Center Orlando<\/a>, Florida until the latter&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/1993_Base_Realignment_and_Closure_Commission\">BRAC<\/a>-mandated closure in 1999. The last class, 9806, graduated from Naval Nuclear Power School at NTC Orlando in December 1998.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the school at Bainbridge, there was a second Nuclear Power School at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Mare_Island_Naval_Shipyard\">Mare Island Naval Shipyard<\/a>, in Vallejo, California. The Mare Island school operated from January 1959 until 1977 when training was consolidated to NTC Orlando.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC) is located on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Joint_Base_Charleston\">Joint Base Charleston<\/a>, in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Construction of the Charleston facility was completed in 1998. Both locations operated simultaneously for a number of months until the last Orlando class graduated.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curriculum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the rigorous training program differs in terms of content for the officers and enlisted ratings, the following topics are provided to all program attendees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mathematics<\/li><li>Nuclear physics<\/li><li>Electrical power theory&nbsp;and generating equipment<\/li><li>Nuclear reactor technology<\/li><li>Thermodynamics<\/li><li>Chemistry<\/li><li>Materials science and metallurgy<\/li><li>Health physics<\/li><li>Reactor principles<\/li><li>Reactor ethics<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the enlisted course, the officer course involves extensive post-calculus mathematical examination of reactor dynamics.<sup><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nukewarriors.com\/npsprep.zip\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Officers also cover all topics; enlisted training is specialized for each student&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Naval_rating\">rating<\/a>. The officer course also assumes students have undergraduate engineering or science degrees.<sup><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.com\/navy\/careers\/nuclear-energy\/submarine-warfare-nuclear.html\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nuclear program is widely acknowledged as having the most demanding academic program in the U.S. military. The school operates at a fast pace, with stringent academic standards in all subjects. Students typically spend 45 hours per week in the classroom, and are required to study an additional 10 to 35 hours per week outside of lecture hours, five days per week. Because the classified materials are restricted from leaving the training building, students cannot study outside of the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who fail tests and otherwise struggle academically are required to review their performance with instructors. The student may be given remedial homework or other study requirements. Failing scores due to personal negligence, rather than a lack of ability, can result in charges of&nbsp;<em>dereliction of duty<\/em>&nbsp;under the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Uniform_Code_of_Military_Justice\">Uniform Code of Military Justice<\/a>. Failing students may be held back to repeat the coursework with a new group of classmates, but such students are typically released from the Nuclear Power Program and are re-designated or discharged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">College credit (enlisted training)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Council of Education recommends an average of 60-80 semester-hours of college credit, in the lower-division baccalaureate\/associate degree category, for completion of the entire curriculum including both Nuclear Field &#8220;A&#8221; School and Naval Nuclear Power School. The variation in total amount depends on the specific pipeline completed&nbsp;\u2014 MM, EM, or ET. Further, under the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges degree program for the Navy (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.soc.aascu.org\/socnav\/Default.html\">SOCNAV<\/a>), the residency requirements at these civilian institutions are reduced to only 10-25%, allowing a student to take as little as 9 units of coursework (typically 3 courses) through the degree-granting institution to complete their Associate in Applied Science degree in nuclear engineering technology or as much as 40 units to complete a Bachelor in Nuclear Engineering Technology degree.<sup>[<em><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Military_Wiki:Citation_needed\">citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup>&nbsp;The following select colleges offer college credit and degree programs to graduates of the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Thomas Edison State College&nbsp;School of Applied Science and Technology Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology (BSAST) Degree is designed for graduates of the U.S. Navy nuclear power program and is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of the&nbsp;Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/li><li>Old Dominion University&#8217;s&nbsp;Batten College of Engineering &amp; Technology&nbsp;offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of the&nbsp;Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The Nuclear Engineering Technology Option of the Mechanical Engineering Technology major is a special program available to graduates of the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power School.,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/military.wikia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_Power_School?fbclid=IwAR3k7ZAp0XapYP17X3fUugeWbJJwNYPX6I-I10IoCUddpDjpmEecSFEEzHk#cite_note-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/li><li>Excelsior College School of Business and Technology&#8217;s Bachelor of Science Nuclear Engineering Technology Degree.
