“Drunk On New Wine”
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be ye
filled with the Spirit;” Ephesians 5:18
There are many contrasts given and comparisons made in
the Word of God between and individual intoxicated on wine
and an individual who is indwelt, imbued and in-filled with the
Holy Spirit. One of the reasons the Apostle Paul made this
contrast is the fact the Ephesians had a very heathenistic and
paganistic background. For the most part, they believed
before they were converted that God was in the blood of
grapes. Therefore, they were of the opinion the more wine
they consumed the more of God they contained. They felt that
being intoxicated brought God into their lives. I’m not sure
America today, with its countless alcoholics, doesn’t believe
the same! Shame! Paul’s contrast tried to communicate to
them, you may know the results of consuming wine, but you
need to know the results that come from being filled with the
Holy Spirit.
In the Upper Room discourse, in John chapter 15, Jesus
said that the branches were to bear fruit and remain part of the
vine. In both the Old and New Testaments, God’s people are
considered branches. Song of Solomon 2:15 says, “Take us
the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines
have tender grapes. ” God’s children are commissioned and
admonished to bear fruit. Jesus said, “I am the vine, ye are the
branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same
bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing’
(John 15:5). – K.M.
