“The Ten Commandments”
“Thou knowest the commandments ,… ” Mark 10:19a
When I was in Junior High Sunday School, our teacher
gave fifty cents to any boy who would memorize the Ten
Commandments. Half the class was filled with Baptist
orphanage boys. Fifty cents was a lot of money to us. We
quizzed each other until we could repeat God’scommandments perfectly. Our teacher reminded us that these
were God’s Commandments, not suggestions.
The Word of God repeatedly reminds us that no one is
righteous in God’s sight (see Rom. 3:10). And, that we have
all sinned (Rom. 3:23). Christianity is the only religion that
teaches salvation by grace. Salvation is the gift of God (see
Eph. 2:8-9). All false religions have one thing in common,
they all teach salvation by good deeds and religious rituals.
They have no assurance, but if they earn Heaven, they have the
right to boast through all eternity … contrary to Scripture (Rom.
3:27; Eph. 2:8-9 again).
Some laws are only found in God’s commandments. The
first four tell us to obey and honor the Lord and His day. The
next six, are between man and man. The Lord God spoke
against adultery and the tenth rules out communism! We are
not to covet what others have. I believe it is a sin to vote for
politicians who have promised to take from the producers and
give to those who are not productive. Communism has always
failed. It always destroys the incentive and the initiative of
others to produce. We must take God’s laws seriously and to
obey them is wisdom. – G.F.
