| College and Civil Discourse The state of higher education is fraught, and some have wondered how things stand at Hillsdale College. We have been featured and mentioned in The Wall Street Journal recently on the subject, so I thought I would share those articles with you. Rest assured—civil discourse is alive and well at Hillsdale College. “There’s More to Education Than Free Speech,” The Wall Street Journal, Oct. 19, 2023 “A college’s purpose isn’t merely to encourage speech. A college’s purpose, through speaking and thinking—the two go together—is to teach students to think and speak better in search of knowledge. How does a college go about that? The word “college” means partnership or community. College is where people come together to use their capacities for speech and thought to understand ultimate questions. It is part of human nature to do this better as a group. But we can’t do it if we are screaming, hostile, or babbling.” “Harvard’s Hamas Confusion,” The Wall Street Journal, Nov. 27, 2023 “But as Larry Arnn, president of Hillsdale, points out, what America really needs from Harvard is clear thinking. ‘If colleges abandon their final cause, which is truth, their formal cause, which is civil discourse, soon breaks down into bullying, canceling, and extortion,’ Mr. Arnn says. ‘That disaster has struck colleges deeply, and now it spreads into the society. We become unable to distinguish the murderers from the defenders of children.’” Hillsdale College is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, and it has been so dedicated for nearly 180 years. It is the dedication among our faculty and students to that pursuit that has made this place serious, civil, and happy. |
