“Heaven Our Home” I Thessalonians 4:13
“Heaven Our Home” “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. ” I Thessalonians 4:13
As a very young lad, one Sunday, as I recall, the lesson was on Heaven. The picture was some artist’s impression of Heaven. It had female angels with mammoth harps and wings like a Boeing 737. I later considered what I had been taught about Heaven—that I would become an angel—but I could hardly manage a guitar, and the idea of dragging around that clumsy harp, while stumbling over those giant wings just didn’t appeal to me! Dr. Ivor Powell, a giant of the faith, once said, “At the age of eighty-three I asked myself what I know about the Home of God, and I was truly shocked to admit I knew very little. Increasing age and the fear that I shall soon be making my own pilgrimage, have begotten within my soul, an intense desire to explore this fascinating subject.” I thought when I became associated with fundamental Baptists that they would be different and have all the answers. I thought they would enlighten me on the subject of Heaven. I have spoken at many fundamental Baptist colleges and seminaries. They taught soul-winning, separation and security, but to my dismay not one had a class on Heaven. Isn’t Heaven what it’s all about? Far too many believers are described in Hebrews 2:15 as living in fear of death all their lifetimes, rather than anticipating the bliss awaiting them in the presence of Jesus. —K.M. DR.
