“Preparing For Harvest” “Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found. “Hosea 14:8

Before we can expect to have God’s fruit grown through us, we have some steps to take. First, clear the ground of the unnecessary. In the parable of the sown seed, Jesus spoke of the unprepared ground (rocky, hard, thorny)(cf. Luke 8:4-8). Un-cleared ground in our lives is also a threat to fruit bearing. Second, sow the seeds into the ground. Seeds do not grow on barn floors. We won’t produce any fruit for God in the comfort of the church building. We must sow our lives into the fields of the world. Third, let God prune us as He sees need. In Spurgeon’s devotional, Morning and Evening, he says, “Our fruit comes from God as to wise husbandry. The gardener’s sharp-edged knife promotes the fruitfulness of the tree… So is it, Christian, with that pruning which the Lord gives thee.” Fourth, work the field. We can’t harvest by lounging, characteristic of so many professing believers. Fruit gathering is hard work, but it produces a joy no one can explain; it must be experienced first-hand. Eliminate clutter in your life, sow seeds in others, and expect God to give you a harvest for your labor. Remember: “… The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest” (Luke 10:2). — G.G.
