The Regulator War part 19- the aftermath and conclusion I hope that this look at the Regulator war has awaken us to realize the price that we have paid for liberty.
The men that were hanged at Hillsboro including Benjamin Merrill were unceremoniously dumped into a mass grave near the Eno river and no one knows their location today. (although a couple of historians have speculated that they may be on the grounds of a school nearby) The Regulator war in North Carolina and persecution in Virginia would fuel Baptist movement across an even wider area. Whole churches would move overland into what is now Tennessee and Kentucky. Others fled into Georgia and South Carolina. In their wake churches were planted all over. As the American Revolution broke upon the land many of those that had went west fought came back as Overmountain Men and fought the British. Others of the same group fought against the Cherokees who were allied with the British. Baptists as a whole stood for the patriot cause with very few being Tories. While the regulator war was tragic what the devil and Tryon had intended for evil was instead used of God to spread his word. The aftermath was used much as the persecution of the church at Jerusalem. Acts 8:4 “Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word.”Not too long after the Regulator War Shubal Stearnes would pass away on November 20th, 1771. But the legacy that was left continues on today. From that little backwoods church that was occupied by the forces of the enemy went out men that spread the Gospel into Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina then into the Midwest and more portions of the South. Instead of squelching the truth persecution only spread the Baptist cause. Never forget the legacy that we as Baptists have left for freedom. Let us ever fight for freedom!!
