“Contrary To Sound Doctrine”

“…and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. ” I Timothy 1:10b & 11

Sadly, few churches even carry a doctrinal statement any longer. One large group wanted to have our church join in a local crusade for souls. I asked the pastor to send me a copy of his doctrinal statement. He replied, “We have only one doctrine: Jesus is Lord.” I informed him that Satan had that doctrinal statement; he knows that Jesus is Lord. This incensed him, and he slammed the phone down!

Doctrine is the way to preserve the spiritual health of the local church. The word for sound means to have sound health, to be well in the body, to be wholesome, uncorrupted.

The early church was known for its doctrine. In Acts 2:42 the church continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine. Doctrine determines a direction for one’s life. Paul warned the churches, in Timothy, to avoid doctrines of devils (cf. I Tim. 4:1). Today very few churches are even concerned about doctrine. They fear the loss of church members if they preach • on certain subjects. The fear to preach the truth because of possible consequences does not bode well for God’s work. We are called to preach the Gospel, but Jesus also said to teach • converts, “…all things whatsoever I have commanded you:… ” (Matt. 28:20b). Doctrine is the communicating of what God’s Word tells us. Let’s get back to sound doctrine! — G.G.
