“A Praying Church”
“These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, … ” Acts. 1 : 14a

They prayed in the Upper Room before Pentecost came. When Peter and John were going and healed the lame man, do you know where they were going? They were going to a prayer meeting. They prayed in Acts 4:31. They prayed when Peter got put in jail. They did not say, “Now, we’d better get us a lawyer. Get a good one because this is serious. They’ve already killed James.” They just went to prayer. Do you know something, when you go to prayer about something especially, when you go to prayer let’s say about a battle. Like old Hezekiah when the Syrian army was formed against him. It was far more powerful than the little handful of men he had. Do you know where Hezekiah went? He went to the temple, to the house of God. He got down at the altar. He prayed at that altar. Do you know what he was doing? He was saying, “Now Lord, fight the Syrian army, not me; I’m in here praying that you’ll take care of it.” God did! I want to tell you, prayer will solve things nothing in this world will ever solve! The early church was a praying church. It goes without saying it was a church that preached the Word of God. It was a church on fire. It was a church that cared for the needs of its membership. It was a missionary church that kept reaching out further and further all the time. What this church was—your church ought to strive to be. — T.M.
