Declaration Signed — Death Sealed Luke 14:27
“Declaration Signed—Death Sealed”
“And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. ” Luke 14:27
It seems we are a very spoiled generation, and as a baby boomer, I include myself. We seem to want a Christian life with no sacrifices, and material benefits from the government with no cost to us! Our generation wants money with no work and unrestricted freedom with no character. When the signers of the Declaration of Independence signed that document, they knew that the cost would be very high, and likely would cost many of them their lives. Yet, they committed because they knew it would be worth it. Many did lose homes, lands and lives. There were men like Nathan Hale, who was hanged for his support of the revolution against England. His dying words are indelibly imprinted in our minds, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” (Sept. 22, 1776). A few years ago there was a university in Pennsylvania that made copies of the Declaration of Independence, and tried to see how many would sign it. Out of nine hundred requests…they could only get forty-six to sign it! Thank God the noble leaders of a bygone day signed it!! Most of them paid dearly and lost everything. Some lost their lives. In the New Testament, many of the followers of Jesus were tortured or martyred for their faith (James, Stephen, et al). Paul challenged Christians that there was a cost to the Christian life. It is absolutely worth the cost in the light of eternity. What are you willing to pay? — C. S.
