“Let the Flesh Starve”
“But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not
provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.”
Romans 13:14
Don’t make opportunities for your flesh to get the upper
hand. Don’t give yourself a chance to fall into sin. Don’t just
avoid sin, avoid the opportunity to sin. The point is, there is
not a verse that condemns a male and female being together in
private quarters where nobody can see them and where they
could go wrong. But we know that it can often and easily lead
to wrong, so we establish a standard to protect us. If you have
two people in that situation and they’re both spiritual, then
their spirituality will protect them. But we can’t depend on
that, because we’re not that spiritual all the time. So, we
establish a standard to protect us and keep us from getting into
a situation where the flesh will be aroused when we’re not
spiritually strong enough to refuse the temptation.
Does the Bible indicate, as in the case of Joseph, that it is
dangerous and that it could lead to wrong? Joseph left his
garment in Mrs. Potiphar’s hand and fled the scene (see Gen.
39:12ff). If it is dangerous and it could lead to wrong or
provide an opportunity for sin, then I’m going to set a standard
that protects me from the very appearance of wrong, because I
don’t want to be led astray. (cf. I Thess. 5:22). Just starve the
flesh to death!! -D.C.
