“The Closest To Jesus’ Heart”

“And that repentance and remission of sins should be

preached in his name among all nations, beginning at

Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.’

Luke 24:47-48

If you and I could sit down and talk for ten minutes, when

the ten minutes were over, what would be my opinion as to

what was closest to your heart? When the time was up and you

went away, I wonder what you would say was closest to my

heart? Jesus left us with no doubt about what was closest to

His heart.

The apostolic, evangelistic, soul-winning church of

Jerusalem did not preach a program but they preached a

Person! They did not deal in abstract theories or philosophies,

but they lifted up and magnified a real and living Saviour.

They did not deal with technicalities while their generation

rushed headlong into Hell; they majored on the message of life

as found in the Son of God. They did not preach to please

everybody and offend nobody; they preached with the power

and demonstration of the Holy Spirit and brought conviction

and fear to the heart of the ungodly. They lifted up Jesus and

magnified Him in all His glorious attributes!

I’m sure you heard the story of the young pastor, well-

educated, refined and eloquent who took a new pulpit and

preached, but no food was found for his listeners. He found a

note on his pulpit one Sunday that read, “Sir, we would see

Jesus!” It angered him at first, then convicted him and

brought him to his knees in prayer … and he was a changed

preacher! “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon

you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued

with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). – T.M.
