SEARCHING FOR SIGNIFICANCE?

SEARCHING FOR SIGNIFICANCE? – by CHARLES CURTMAN – Mar 21, 2026
I’ve had a book in my library for years, entitled The Search for Significance, by Robert McGee. It comes highly recommended, but I haven’t yet gotten around to reading a single sentence of it. The title though, has always intrigued me.
More people than we might realize and some that we’d never suspect, are not quite sure what significance there is to their being alive. Many think, at least for a while, that significance in life is synonymous with the personal success they’ve had or not had in a particular area or areas. They measure their significance on the basis of their popularity, the possessions they have, or whatever position they might hold, but in time come to realize that none of these things can adequately assure them that their lives have have any real significance.

Too many people are looking for their significance in all the wrong places, and in terms of it being a future expectation and something they must, in one way or another, earn. But the Truth is that no one will understand and appreciate their personal significance until they look to God, and find it in His great love and the grace that is involved in His love for them.
I’ve used a lot of impersonal pronouns here—“them,” and “they,” and “we.” But all of this applies directly to you—to the person reading this right now. God has loved you with unfathomable, immeasurable love since before your conception. There are no “if,” “ands” or “buts,” about this, or exceptions to it, where you or anyone else is concerned.
The love of the Creator of the universe and the King of kings and Lord of lords, saturates, as it were, your entire DNA with a significance that is beyond complete understanding, but is nonetheless true and real. of every man, woman and child born into this world.
God is the very essence of love (1 John 4:8, 16). All of His being and all of His doing are rooted and grounded in His love which need not and cannot be earned by anyone. His love for you doesn’t involve a hoped for expectation in the near or distant future. It is something real relative to you, and has been as long as you’ve been alive: something for you to accept, experience and enjoy now and forever.
This is about you, and your own personal significance; significance based upon God’s love for you, which He has demonstrated by becoming incarnate and by coming into this world as the second Person of the triune godhead to undo all that sin and the devil has done through the sacrifice of Himself on the cross and the victory He has had over death and the grave. See: Matt. 1:23; 2 Cor. 5:19; 1 Tim. 3:16; John 1:1-4; Heb. 1:1-3; Phil. 2. 2 Cor. 8:9). Then see: John 3:16; Rom. 10:9-13).
