December 9, 2020  · Snapshots from my library 2 Isaac Backus- History of the Baptists It is hard to underestimate the impact the Isaac Backus had for religious freedom in New England. He argued for the disenfranchisement of the congregational church that had so oppressed the Baptists . One of the primary weapons in this battle was “A History of New England with particular reference to the denomination of Christians called Baptists.” This detailed the persecutions that the Baptists had faced and was a major factor in changing that. I have not went through all of this book yet- but have skimmed through some very interesting info. Sometimes the story of finding a book is somewhat remarkable. You may notice I only have volume one. My copy is the second edition reprint from 1871 published by the Backus Historical Society. I found this in a local estate sale. This was one of those estate sales that was a hoarder house. It was also one that had to have three sales to clear out the house. I found this in a box of books stacked in the basement. I think I went through every box trying to find the others. (threw my back out too) I checked at each of the three sales so I think they only had the one volume. This just goes to show that you can find books anywhere. (This is a pretty rare volume and I doubt I will a matching second volume except electronically at least that I can afford.) There are free electronic copies online Volume one https://archive.org/details/newengl01back and volume two https://archive.org/details/newengl02back There were also some paperback reprints made by Baptist Standard bearer. (Some modern reprinters are doing copies but I have heard much negative results on these)
